PHILOSOPHY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF NURSING: Updated 1-4-10

The Department of Nursing Services at Hazleton General Hospital believes that nursing has a significant role in the maintenance and improvement of health along a positive continuum for all individuals.

We believe that nursing functions dependently, interdependently, and independently in its relationship with other health care providers - all of whom share goals of prevention of disease and disability, care of the ill, promotion and maintenance of optimal health for all individuals and achievement of a dignified death.

The function of the Department of Nursing Service is to provide an organizational structure conducive to provision of high-quality nursing care, effective utilization of resources and support and participation in education programs. It must manage the activities for which it is directly responsible and provide for the professional growth of its employees. Opportunities for knowledge acquisition are provided by workshops, classes, seminars, conferences and clinical experience for all nursing personnel and by encouraging personnel to continue in their own developmental and educational pursuits.

We believe that quality of nursing care is achieved by an adequate and competent staff of nurses and related personnel.

The primary emphasis of the Department of Nursing Services is the provision of patient care; therefore all nursing personnel (including the administrative staff) must maintain a clinical component and excellence in nursing practice.

We believe that the Department of Nursing has an obligation to cooperate with others in providing health services and health teaching for the patient, family and community.
