Search Engines and Databases

On this page, you will find both consumer and professional
links to medical databases. As you will see, some of the professional
links require passwords, which are available by calling the
library. These sites require the GHHA Library to pay a membership
fee, thus access to these sites is limited to professionals.


Consumer Health Databases:

Medline Plus


Specifically geared to the health consumer, Medline Plus
is a program of the National Library of Medicine to meet the
need for authoritative information on the Internet.
This service provides access to extensive information
about specific diseases and conditions and has links to consumer
health information from the National Institutes of Health,
clearinghouses, dictionaries, lists of hospitals and physicians,
health information in Spanish and other languages, and clinical
trials.



Health Finder

Developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services,
this site directs you to selected online publications, clearinghouses,
databases, web sites, and support and self-help groups, as
well as the government agencies and not-for-profit organizations
that produce reliable information for the public.


CHID Online

A bibliographic database produced by health-related
agencies of the Federal Government.



Medical Databases:

PubMed

Use this link for public access to PubMed, the National Library
of Medicine’s Medline database.





CancerNet

The National Cancer Institute's web site that offers a wide
range of accurate, credible cancer information, including
peer-reviewed statements on many different types of cancer
for patients and detailed treatment statement for health
care professionals.



MD Consult Text / Web Version
(Professional Staff Only)

35 full-text books, 45 full-text clinical journals, 30,000
drugs, 6,000 Patient Education handouts, 600 clinical Practice
Guidelines, MEDLINE, AIDSLINE, HealthSTAR, CANCERLIT.
Complete lists of the journals and books can be obtained
from the library.

Ovid: Medline (Password required)

Citations and abstracts from Medline from 1950 to date. Database includes full text of New England Journal of Medicine and JAMA from 1993 to date.






Ebsco Host Databases (Professional staff password required)


CINAHL

Description: CINAHL is the authoritative
resource for nursing and allied health professionals, students,
educators and researchers. This database provides indexing
for over 1,700 current nursing and allied health journals
and publications dating back to 1982, totaling over 1,000,000
records.


Pre-CINAHL

Description: A companion database to CINAHL,
Pre-CINAHL
is intended to provide current awareness
of new journal articles, and includes a rotating file of
limited bibliographic information (no subject searching),
which are available to researchers only for the time when
these articles are being assigned additional indexing.


MEDLINE

Description: MEDLINE provides
authoritative medical information on medicine, nursing, dentistry,
veterinary medicine, the health care system, pre-clinical
sciences, and much more. Created by the National Library
of Medicine, MEDLINE allows users to search abstracts
from over 4,600 current biomedical journals.


Biomedical Reference Collection: Expanded

Description: Designed for doctors, research
scientists, students and clinical specialists, this database
provides more than 200 full text journals. Covering virtually
all areas of medical study, all full text journals included
the Biomedical Reference Collection: Expanded Edition are
also indexed in MEDLINE.


Nursing and Allied Health Collection: Expanded

Description:
Designed for nursing and allied
health professionals, students, educators and researchers,
this database provides full text for more than 200 journals
covering the areas of nursing, biomedicine, health sciences,
consumer health and allied health disciplines. Nearly all-full
text titles included in Nursing & Allied Health:
Expanded Edition
are indexed in CINAHL.


Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection

Description:
This database provides coverage
of more than 550 full text journals, including more than
525 peer-reviewed titles. Psychology & Behavioral
Sciences Collection
covers topics such as emotional
and behavioral characteristics, psychiatry & psychology,
mental processes, anthropology, and observational and experimental
methods. Nearly every full text title included in this
database is indexed in PsycINFO. This database is updated
daily via EBSCOhost.


Health Business FullTEXT

Description: This database provides full
text coverage for nearly 130 well-known administrative journals.
Critical for hospital administrators and managers, this database
includes publications covering the business of health care
administration and much more.


Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR)

Description: Cochrane Database of Systematic
Reviews
contains full text articles, as well as protocols
focusing on the effects of healthcare. Data is evidence-based
medicine and is often combined statistically (with meta-analysis)
to increase the power of the findings of numerous studies,
each too small to produce reliable results individually.


Databases of Abstracts of Reviews of Effectiveness

Description:
The Database of Abstracts
of Reviews of Effectiveness (DARE) includes abstracts of
published systematic reviews on the effects of health care
from around the world, which have been critically analyzed
according to a high standard of criteria. This database provides
access to quality reviews in subjects for which a Cochrane
review may not yet exist.


Cochrane Controlled Trials Registrar

Description:
Cochrane Controlled Trials
Register is a bibliography of controlled trials identified
by contributors to the Cochrane Collaboration and others,
as part of an international effort to hand search the world's
journals and create an unbiased source of data for systematic
reviews.

Description:
Updated daily, AccessMedicine provides access to world-renowned medical references including Harrison's Online, Current Medical Diagnosis and Treatment, a LANGE educational library, and much more. .
