Free Osteoporosis Heel Scan Available Wednesday at Mountaintop Family CareFor Immediate Release
Date: July 14, 2010
Contact: GHHA Public Relations @ 570-501-4787
For Immediate Release
Osteoporosis increases the risk of bone fractures, especially in the hips, spine, and wrists. Although it can affect anyone, the risk of developing osteoporosis increases with age, affects women significantly more often than men, and is most prevalent in Caucasian and Asian women. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF), 10 million people in the United States have osteoporosis and another 34 million have low bone mass and are at risk of developing the disease. Of those who have osteoporosis, 80% are women.
On Wednesday, July 21, from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. free osteoporosis heel scans will be available at Mountaintop Family Care, 56 North Mountain Blvd. The goal of osteoporosis treatment is the prevention of bone fractures by stopping bone loss and by increasing bone density and strength.
This healthcare team will be led by Dr. Eugene Gorski, Family Physician, and Gretchen Heery, Nurse Practitioner, who have been providing quality, compassionate health care services within the Greater Hazleton Health Alliance for many years. They will be joined in practice with Carol Savner, LPN, and Cathy Furedi as medical assistant to the team. Together, this team represents 40+ years of combined professional health care experience.
Although early detection and timely treatment of osteoporosis can substantially decrease the risk of future fracture, none of the available treatments for osteoporosis are complete cures. In other words, it is difficult to completely rebuild bone that has been weakened by osteoporosis. Therefore, prevention of osteoporosis is as important as treatment.

Healthy Beginnings Plus, a comprehensive prenatal care program of Hazleton General Hospital, will open a clinic in Hometown on July 1. Patient appointments are now being accepted for its location on Route 309, inside the ExcelCare Pain Management Center office building.
Healthy Beginnings Plus is a state-funded prenatal care program that provides low-income mothers who are on or eligible for Medical Assistance with high-quality, prenatal services.
“Mothers who receive early prenatal care have stronger, healthier babies and reduce the risk of premature deliveries,” said Suzanne Lombardo, Care Coordinator of Healthy Beginnings Plus. “Our team of OB/GYN doctors and registered nurses work with our patients to make sure they receive all the appropriate medical care they need to have a healthy baby.”
Healthy Beginnings Plus provides comprehensive services to expectant mothers including prenatal medical care visits by an on-site OB/GYN physician and registered nurse; intensive and extensive prenatal care for a high-risk pregnancy; diet information and counseling for mothers and their babies; free prenatal, childbirth, and parental education classes, home care visits, onsite laboratory and ultrasound testing; and post-delivery follow-up visits. “Our staff is also ready to help mothers with applying for Medical Assistance, if needed,” said Lombardo. “Since income guidelines for Medical Assistance are higher for pregnant women than for the general population, expectant mothers may qualify and not even know it.”
The Healthy Beginnings physician team includes Farag Salama, MD, and Scott Muir, DO, both board-certified obstetricians/gynecologists associated in private practice with Muir OB/GYN Specialists in Hazleton. All babies will be delivered in the state-of-the-art Family Birthing Center at Hazleton General Hospital.
“Hazleton General Hospital is committed to its mission of meeting the healthcare needs of the communities it serves,” said Jim Edwards, President and CEO of the Greater Hazleton Health Alliance. “An important need was identified to address the prenatal care of underserved women in Hometown and surrounding communities, and we are very pleased to be able to provide this service to these mothers.” The hospital also operates a Healthy Beginnings Program in Hazleton.
A free community open house is scheduled for Wednesday, June 30, from 5:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. More information can be obtained by calling 668-3898.
Hazleton General Hospital receives American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines Gold Performance Achievement AwardFor Immediate Release
Date: June 16, 2010
Contact: GHHA Public Relations @ 570-501-4787
For Immediate Release
Hazleton General Hospital recently received the American Stroke Association’s Get With The GuidelinesSM–Stroke Gold Performance Achievement Award. The award recognizes Hazleton General’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of stroke care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment for at least 24 months according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations.
“With a stroke, time lost is brain lost, and the Get With The Guidelines–Stroke Gold Performance Achievement Award addresses the important element of time,” said Jim Edwards, President/CEO of the Greater Hazleton Health Alliance. Hazleton General Hospital has developed a comprehensive system for rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients admitted to the emergency department. This includes always being equipped to provide brain imaging scans, having neurologists available to conduct patient evaluations and using clot-busting medications when appropriate.
To receive the Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Gold Performance Achievement Award, Hazleton General Hospital demonstrated 85% adherence in the Get With The Guidelines–Stroke key measures for 24 or more consecutive months. These include aggressive use of medications like tPA, antithrombotics, anticoagulation therapy, DVT prophylaxis, cholesterol-reducing drugs, and smoking cessation. Hazleton General Hospital has exceeded compliance levels and maintains a 100 percent compliance level for all stroke measures.
“The American Stroke Association commends Hazleton General Hospital for its success in implementing standards of care and protocols,” said Lee H. Schwamm, M.D., Vice-Chair of the national Get With the Guidelines Steering Committee and Vice-Chair of the Neurology department and director of acute stroke services at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. “The full implementation of acute care and secondary prevention recommendations and guidelines is a critical step in saving the lives and improving outcomes of stroke patients.”
Get With The Guidelines–Stroke uses the “teachable moment,” the time soon after a patient has had a stroke, when they are most likely to listen to and follow their healthcare professionals’ guidance. Studies demonstrate that patients who are taught how to manage their risk factors while still in the hospital reduce their risk of a second heart attack or stroke. Through Get With The Guidelines–Stroke, customized patient education materials are made available at the point of discharge, based on patients’ individual risk profiles. The take-away materials are written in an easy-to-understand format and are available in English and Spanish. In addition, the Get With The Guidelines Patient Management Tool* provides access to up-to-date cardiovascular and stroke science at the point of care.
“The time is right for Hazleton General Hospital to be focused on improving the quality of stroke care by implementing Get With The Guidelines–Stroke. The number of acute ischemic stroke patients eligible for treatment is expected to grow over the next decade due to increasing stroke incidence and a large aging population,” said Jim Edwards, President/CEO of the Greater Hazleton Health Alliance.
According to the American Stroke Association, each year approximately 795,000 people suffer a stroke — 610,000 are first attacks and 185,000 are recurrent. Every 40 seconds, someone in the United States is suffering from a stroke. This deadly condition accounts for 1 out of every 18 deaths in the United States.

Each year about 700,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke in the United States. Over 150,00 of these people die, making stroke the third leading cause of death. About 5.7 million stroke survivors are alive today, many of them with permanent stroke-related disabilities.
After a patient has had a stroke, they are most likely to listen to and follow their healthcare professionals’ guidance. Studies demonstrate that patients who are taught how to manage their risk factors reduce their risk of a second stroke.
The Gunderson Rehabilitation Center at Hazleton General Hospital will start a Stroke Support Group on Monday, May 24, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. The Gunderson Center is located on the 6th floor at Hazleton General Hospital. The Stroke Support Group is to help families connect with other stroke survivors and caregivers. At each meeting you will be given tips on daily living. Family and friends are encouraged to come. The group will meet the 4th Monday of each month.
Hazleton General Hospital is the first and only hospital in Northeast Pennsylvania to be certified as a Primary Stroke Center. Please call 501.4632 if you would like to attend or for more information.

A Stroke is a type of cardiovascular disease. It affects the arteries leading to and within the brain. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood (and oxygen) it needs, so it starts to die.

Diabetes Support Group to Meet FridayFor Immediate Release

Despite all the advances in diabetes, education remains the cornerstone of diabetes management. People with diabetes, unlike those with many other medical problems, can't just take pills or insulin in the morning, then forget about their health the rest of the day.
Differences in diet, exercise levels, stress and other factors may all affect blood sugar levels. So the more people with diabetes learn how these factors affect them, the better control they will be able to achieve.
On Friday, May 7, 2010 at 12:00 (noon) at the Hazleton Health & Wellness Center, the Diabetes Support Group will meet. Join Amy Cartwright, Dietician, as she leads the group in a discussion about how to handle your diabetes.
The support group meets every other month at the Hazleton Health & Wellness Center. New members and family members are encouraged to attend. The meetings are based on attendance and guest speakers are arranged by requests.
To find out more information or to register for the support group, contact Melanie at 501.4787.
Do You Have an Advance Directive? For Immediate Release
Date: April 15, 2010
Contact: GHHA Public Relations @ 570-501-4787
For Immediate Release
Do you know what healthcare treatments you would and would not want if you could not speak for yourself? Do other people know what your wishes are? The 2nd Annual National Healthcare Decision Day will be held on Friday, April 16, 2010, a day for all people regardless of age or current health to be reminded of the importance of making their healthcare wishes known to loved ones and their care providers.
Everyone is encouraged to voice their wishes and take steps to ensure that their choices are known and protected. An Advance Directive is a legal document that tells healthcare providers who it is that you wish to make medical decisions for you and what treatments you would want or not want, if you are ever not able to tell care providers what you would want in a medical emergency or life-limiting illness. The simple act of creating an Advance Directive can turn out to be an incredible gift for loved ones in the event of an accident or severe illness.
Advance Directives are written instructions about your future medical care. They do not go into effect until you are no longer able to make decisions. Adults can benefit from thinking about what their healthcare choices would be if they were unable to speak for themselves.
Advance directives come in two main forms:
A "healthcare power of attorney" (or "proxy" or "agent" or "surrogate") documents the person you select to be your voice for your healthcare decisions if you cannot speak for yourself. Your “healthcare power of attorney” will make medical decisions based on your wishes identified in your Advance Directive. In states that recognize these documents, families and healthcare providers cannot override your living will or your agent’s decision. It is a good idea to discuss your wishes with your friends, family members, and your doctor, now, while you still can.
Your healthcare agent has to meet the following requirements:
· Anyone over the age of 18
· Can be a family member, loved one, or close friend
· Someone who: you trust, knows you well, will advocate on your behalf, and will honor your wishes
A "living will" documents what kinds of medical treatments you would or would not want at the end of life. A living will is a type of advance directive called a healthcare treatment directive. A living will spells out the measures you do and do not wish to have taken to extend your life when you are clearly dying. You may decide whether or not you would want breathing machines, feeding tubes, oxygen, IV fluids, or medicines to be used. A living will needs to be signed in front of a witness. A witness cannot be a relative, creditors and heirs to your estate, or your doctor. It is important that a living will cover decisions about your healthcare only when you have a terminal illness. It is better to prepare a living will when you are healthy, not when you have been ill or in the hospital.
Make sure your Advance Directive reflects your wishes. If you plan on moving to another state make sure you update your Advance Directive, because it may not be valid in the state that you move to. Some states do not recognize living wills that have been drafted in other states.
Your Advance Directive does not expire and can be updated as needed. It is important for your family members to know your wishes in case of an emergency. Also, you should take a copy of your Advance Directive to the hospital whenever you are admitted so that it can become a permanent part of your medical record.
