For Immediate Release
The Alliance Medical Group, in conjunction with the Hazleton Health & Wellness Center, will offer free stroke screenings on Friday, April 19 and again on Friday, May 10, from 12:00 p.m. (noon) to 4:00 p.m. at the Hazleton Health & Wellness Center, Suite 214, located at 50 Moisey Drive in Hazleton.
Stroke is the Number 4 cause of death, and the leading cause of adult disability in the United States. Stroke is brain damage caused by a blocked blood vessel or bleeding in the brain. The signs of a stroke may include weakness, numbness, blurred vision, confusion, and slurred speech.
A variety of five noninvasive health screenings will be available to determine a person’s risk of a stroke. An ultrasound machine will be utilized for a portion of the screening to exam the patient’s carotid artery, to determine any buildup of plaque, the leading cause of a stroke. An ultrasound examination of the abdomen will also be completed to detect the presence of an abdominal aortic aneurysm. Results of a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm can be life threatening.
The remaining tests involve a blood pressure measurement taken at the ankle and the arm to measure the fatty plaque buildup in leg arteries; a heart rhythm screening; and an osteoporosis screening. Please note that a heart rhythm screening should not be used as a substitute for an EKG. A cardiologist will also be onsite for consultation.
An appointment is required; space is limited. Call 501-4AMG (4264) to make an appointment.
"AMG to Present "Overactive Bladder?" Program"
For Immediate Release
Date: March 26, 2013
Contact: GHHA Public Relations @ 570-501-4249
For Immediate Release
The Alliance Medical Group (AMG) will conduct a free “Overactive Bladder?” educational program on Thursday, April 25 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Hazleton Health & Wellness Center located at 50 Moisey Drive in Hazleton. Join Dr. Sheila Hockman, from Alliance Medical Group Obstetrics and Gynecology, as she discusses some of the most common causes of overactive bladder along with treatment options.
Overactive bladder is a condition that affects more than 17 million people; with women accounting for 85% of all patients. The condition is a problem with bladder-storage function that causes a sudden urge to urinate. The urge may be difficult to stop, and overactive bladder may lead to the involuntary loss of urine (incontinence). The condition affects people of all ages and can significantly impact a person’s quality of life.
Dr. Hockman will discuss the variety of treatments and medications currently available to relieve overactive bladder symptoms and to reduce episodes of urge incontinence - which is the involuntary loss of urine immediately following an urgent need to urinate. Interstim® Therapy is one of the latest treatment options available for people who have not had success in relieving their overactive bladder symptoms by conventional medications and treatments. InterStim Therapy is a proven neuromodulation therapy that targets the communication problem between the brain and the nerves that control the bladder. If those nerves are not communicating correctly, the bladder will not function properly. The system uses an external device during a trial assessment period and an internal device for long-term therapy. Medicare and many other private insurance companies cover InterStim Therapy.
Light refreshments will be served. Pre-registration is required and space is limited. Visit www.ghha.org and register online through the Calendar of Events or call (570) 501-6204.
Signs and symptoms of overactive bladder may mean you:
•Feel a sudden urge to urinate that's difficult to control
•Experience urge incontinence — the involuntary loss of urine immediately following an urgent need to urinate
•Urinate frequently, usually eight or more times in 24 hours
•Awaken two or more times in the night to urinate (nocturia)

“GHHA is experiencing all of these issues and we are being proactive in our recruiting efforts in an effort to ensure we have the proper compliment of nurses to care for our patients. As an organization we provide excellent wages and benefits in a setting that allows applicants who are committed to patient care excellence an opportunity to make a difference in the healthcare of our community,” added Deffley.
Hazleton General Hospital, part of the Greater Hazleton Health Alliance, is a 150-bed inpatient acute care facility providing quality medical and surgical services; emergency services including an accredited primary stroke center and chest pain center; a family birthing center; inpatient rehabilitation, an accredited bariatric program, and a home care service.

"New Varicose Vein Treatment Available"
For Immediate Release

For Immediate Release
A new, cutting-edge laser treatment for those suffering from varicose veins is now available in the Hazleton area. VenaCure EVLT is now being offered by Dr. Julio Calderin, a board-certified general and vascular surgeon with Alliance Medical Group (AMG). Dr. Calderin is the only provider in the Greater Hazleton Area to currently offer this procedure.
Varicose veins are twisted, enlarged veins near the surface of the skin. They are most common in the legs and ankles. They usually aren’t serious, but can sometimes lead to other problems, or in some cases, can be a sign of a blockage in the deeper veins called deep vein thrombosis-which can be life threatening. Varicose veins are caused by weakened valves and veins in the legs. Varicose veins often run in families; aging, being overweight, pregnancy, or having a job where you must stand for an extended amount of time also increases your risk.
The VenaCure EVLT system has become the standard of care in the United States for the treatment of varicose veins. The nonsurgical treatment usually takes one hour or less (depending on the condition of the veins). The treatment is virtually painless and requires little to no down time. Dr. Calderin’s office is located at the Hazleton Health & Wellness Center, 50 Moisey Drive in Hazleton, Suite 214. For more information on this state-of-the-art procedure, call 501-4AMG (4624).
Symptoms of Varicose Veins:
•Heaviness, burning, aching, tiredness, or pain in your legs. Symptoms may be worse after your stand or sit for long periods of time
•Swelling in your feet and ankles
•Skin changes, such as: color changes, dry/thinned skin, inflammation, scaling
•Open sores, or you may bleed after a minor injury
"GHHA to Offer Free Colorectal Cancer Screening"

For Immediate Release
March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and nowhere should that be more important than in Northeastern Pennsylvania. While colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosis in the U.S., it was the leading cancer diagnosis in NEPA last year.
In observance of the month, the Greater Hazleton Health Alliance will host an open-house of their Endoscopy Suite, located at the Hazleton General Hospital, on Tuesday, March 19, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. All attendees will have the opportunity to: have on-on-one discussions with Dr. Edward Polashenski and Dr. Robert Yamulla, Alliance Medical Group Gastroenterologists, Hazleton General Hospital Anesthesiologists, and Nursing Staff; tour the Endoscopy Suite, in addition to receiving a free (Hemoccult) colorectal cancer screening kit.
Colon cancer and cancer of the rectum usually begin as a small polyp. While most colon polyps are benign, some do become cancerous. Colon cancer symptoms may include a change in bowel habits or bleeding, but usually colon cancer strikes without symptoms. That’s why it’s important to get a colon cancer screening test, such as a colonoscopy. The ‘key’ is early detection; if the cancer is found early, the doctor can use surgery, radiation, and/or chemotherapy for effective treatment. Colorectal cancer screening saves lives. The risk of getting colorectal cancer increases with age. If everyone who is 50 years old or older were screened regularly, as many as 60% of deaths from colorectal cancer could be avoided.
Light refreshments will be served. Pre-registration is required. Visit www.ghha.org and register online through the Calendar of Events or call (570) 501-6204.
Every one of us is at risk for colorectal cancer. The majority of people who develop colorectal cancer have no known risk factors. The risk of developing colorectal cancer increases with advancing age. More than 90% of cases occur in people aged 50 or older. Other risk factors include having—
-Inflammatory bowel disease
-A personal or family history of colorectal cancer or colorectal polyps
-A genetic syndrome such as familial adenomatous polyposis or hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (Lynch syndrome)
Lifestyle factors that may contribute to increased risk of colorectal cancer include—
-Lack of regular physical activity
-Low fruit and vegetable intake
-A low-fiber and high-fat
-Overweight and obesity
-Alcohol consumption
-Tobacco use

Did you know that cardiovascular disease takes the lives of more than 2,150 Americans each day, an average of 1 death every 40 seconds? Heart disease affects people of all ages, genders, and ethnic backgrounds.
The best way to treat heart disease is to prevent it altogether. Taking steps to adopt a healthy lifestyle can significantly reduce your risk of heart disease, and increase your odds of living a long and healthy life. In honor of National Heart Month, the Greater Hazleton Health Alliance (GHHA) has planned several heart- healthy education programs to educate men and women about heart disease. Healthier life-style habits decrease your chance of developing heart disease. The risk of coronary heart disease can be reduced by taking steps to prevent and control those factors that put people at greater risk for heart disease. "HGH receives Get With The Guidelines- Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award"

For Immediate Release
Hazleton General Hospital (HGH) has received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award. The award recognizes Hazleton General Hospital’s commitment and success in implementing excellent care for stroke patients, according to evidence-based guidelines. This is the fourth consecutive year in which HGH has received the award.
To receive the award, Hazleton General Hospital met or exceeded the stringent standards of the Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Quality Measures, which are reporting initiatives to measure quality of care.
These measures include aggressive use of medications, such as antithrombotics, anticoagulation therapy, deep vein thrombosis prophylaxis, cholesterol reducing drugs and smoking cessation, all aimed at reducing death and disability and improving the lives of stroke patients.
In addition to the Get With The Guideline-Stroke award HGH has also been recognized as a recipient of the association’s Target: Stroke Honor Roll, for improving stroke care. Over the past quarter, at least 50 percent of the hospital’s eligible ischemic stroke patients have received tissue plasminogen activator, or tPA, within 60 minutes of arriving at the hospital (known as ‘door-to-needle’ time). A thrombolytic, or clot-busting agent, tPA is the only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the urgent treatment of ischemic stroke. If given intravenously in the first three hours after the start of stroke symptoms, tPA has been shown to significantly reverse the effects of stroke and reduce permanent disability.
“With a stroke, time lost is brain lost, and the Get With The Guidelines–Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award demonstrates Hazleton General Hospital’s commitment to being one of the top hospitals in the country for providing aggressive, proven stroke care,” said Dr. Anthony Valente, Medical Director, Greater Hazleton Health Alliance. “We will continue with our focus on providing care that has been shown in the scientific literature to quickly and efficiently treat stroke patients with evidence-based protocols.”
“Hazleton General Hospital is to be commended for its commitment to implementing standards of care and protocols for treating stroke patients,” said Lee H. Schwamm, M.D., chair of the Get With The Guidelines National Steering Committee and director of the TeleStroke and Acute Stroke Services at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. “The full implementation of acute care and secondary prevention recommendations and guidelines is a critical step in saving the lives and improving outcomes of stroke patients.”
Get With The Guidelines–Stroke uses the “teachable moment,” the time soon after a patient has had a stroke, when they are most likely to listen to and follow their healthcare professionals’ guidance. Studies demonstrate that patients who are taught how to manage their risk factors while still in the hospital reduce their risk of a second heart attack or stroke. Through Get With The Guidelines–Stroke, customized patient education materials are made available at the point of discharge, based on patients’ individual risk profiles. The take-away materials are written in an easy-to-understand format and are available in English and Spanish. In addition, the Get With The Guidelines Patient Management Tool gives healthcare providers access to up-to-date cardiovascular and stroke science at the point of care.
“Hazleton General Hospital has once again proven itself to be a leader at providing the highest quality stroke care for our patients. The American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines–Stroke protocols have been an important component in this process. The number of acute ischemic stroke patients eligible for treatment is expected to grow over the next decade due to increasing stroke incidence and a large aging population,” said Jim Edwards, President and CEO of the Greater Hazleton Health Alliance. “This means more and more patients will be depending on the outstanding stroke care we provide.”
According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is one of the leading causes of death and serious, long-term disability in the United States. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds; someone dies of a stroke every four minutes; and 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.

Guidelines-Heart Failure Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award"

For Immediate Release
Hazleton General Hospital has received the Get With The Guidelines®–Heart Failure Gold Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association. The recognition signifies that Hazleton General Hospital has reached an exceptional goal of treating heart failure patients according to the guidelines of care recommended by the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology.
This marks the fifth year that Hazleton General Hospital has been recognized with a quality achievement award.
Get With The Guidelines–Heart Failure helps Hazleton General Hospital’s staff develop and implement acute and secondary prevention guideline processes to improve patient care and outcomes. The program provides hospitals with a web-based patient management tool, best practice discharge protocols and standing orders, along with a robust registry and real-time benchmarking capabilities to track performance.
In addition to the Get With The Guideline-Heart Failure Award Hazleton General Hospital has also been recognized as a recipient of the association’s Target: Heart Failure Honor Roll, for improving Heart Failure care. Target: Heart Failure focuses on three key areas of patient care. Medication Optimization, Early Follow-up Care Coordination, and Enhanced Patient Education. To qualify for the Target: Heart Failure Honor Roll, Hospitals must demonstrate 50% or greater compliance in these areas of care for their Heart Failure Patients. Hazleton General Hospital was one of only two hospitals in the country to receive this quality recognition.
The quick and efficient use of guideline procedures can improve the quality of care for heart failure patients, save lives and ultimately, reduce healthcare costs by lowering the recurrence of heart attacks. “Recent studies show that patients treated in hospitals participating in the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines-Heart Failure program receive a higher quality of care and may experience better outcomes,” said Lee H. Schwamm, M.D., chair of the Get With The Guidelines National Steering Committee and director of the TeleStroke and Acute Stroke Services at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Mass. “Hazleton General Hospital’s team is to be commended for their commitment to improving the care of their patients.”
Following Get With The Guidelines–Heart Failure treatment guidelines, heart failure patients are started on aggressive risk-reduction therapies if needed, including cholesterol-lowering drugs, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, aspirin, diuretics and anticoagulants while in the hospital. Before discharge, they also receive education on managing their heart failure and overall health, including lifestyle modifications and follow-up care. Hospitals must adhere to these measures at a set level for a designated period of time to be eligible for the achievement awards.
“Hazleton General Hospital is dedicated to making our care for heart failure patients among the best in the country. The American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines–Heart Failure program helps us to accomplish this goal,” said Jim Edwards, President and CEO of the Greater Hazleton Health Alliance. “This recognition demonstrates that we are on the right track and we’re very proud of our team of physicians and healthcare professionals.”
According to the American Heart Association, about 5.7 million people suffer from heart failure. Statistics also show that, each year, 670,000 new cases are diagnosed and more than 277,000 people will die of heart failure. However, many heart failure patients can lead a full, enjoyable life when their condition is managed with proper medications and devices and with healthy lifestyle changes.

Hazleton, PA (November 13, 2012) – – Pulmonary care at Hazleton General Hospital is in the top 5% of the nation and was named “America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Pulmonary Care,” according to a new report from Healthgrades, the leading provider of information to help consumers make an informed decision about a physician or hospital. Hazleton General Hospital also ranks #5 in Pennsylvania. The report, American Hospital Quality Outcomes 2013: Healthgrades Report to the Nation, evaluates how approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide performed on risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates for nearly 30 of the most common conditions treated and procedures performed from 2009 through 2011.
In its study published today, Healthgrades found that patients have a 75% lower risk of dying when treated at a hospital receiving 5 stars than if they were treated at a hospital receiving 1 star, based on risk-adjusted mortality rates across 18 common procedures and diagnoses, such as heart bypass surgery, stroke, and pneumonia. Healthgrades also found that 235,378 lives could have been saved during 2009-2011 if all hospitals performed at a 5-star level.
Making objective measures of hospital quality more publicly available is imperative for helping consumers make more informed provider decisions. According to new research conducted by Harris Interactive for Healthgrades, 89% of Americans in 27 top designated market areas believe hospital performance (defined as how well patients do at that hospital compared to others) is important but only 37% know where to find the information.
Other notable HealthGrades’ awards include:

“This latest recognition for being one of America’s Top 100 Hospitals, and # 5 in Pennsylvania, in Pulmonary Care is confirmation of the superb efforts and hard work of our healthcare team,” said Jim Edwards, President and CEO of Greater Hazleton Health Alliance. “This award, when combined with many similar national awards, gives our community confidence that they can trust the care they receive here to be better than larger facilities out of town. These ratings demonstrate that we value our patients and work hard to provide them with high quality care.”
For its 2013 hospital quality outcomes analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 40 million Medicare hospitalization records for services performed at short-term, acute care hospitals nationwide. Healthgrades found that patients treated in hospitals receiving 5 stars had, on average, 75% lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals receiving 1 star (across 18 common procedures and diagnoses, such as heart bypass surgery, stroke, and pneumonia).
Healthgrades independently measures hospitals based on data that hospitals submit to the federal government. No hospital can opt in or out of being measured, and no hospital pays to be measured. Healthgrades risk adjusts for patient demographic characteristics and clinical risk factors, thereby taking into account how sick patients were before they were admitted to the hospital.
